💡 A local nonprofit's 5K returns with a mission worth knowing
When someone survives a stroke, the immediate crisis gets all the attention. What often gets overlooked is everything after: the out-of-pocket costs insurance won't cover, the social isolation, the caregivers quietly burning out. Shine A Light On Stroke was cofounded in 2024 by Bridget Callahan and Bridget DiMaio, a local Occupational Therapist and Speech-Language Pathologist who saw that gap firsthand while working together at an outpatient clinic.
The nonprofit offers a financial grant for Delaware stroke survivors and caregivers to help cover what insurance misses, including adaptive equipment, transportation, medication copays, and more. They run an in-person support group in New Castle County with plans to expand statewide, and their free Creative Arts Series uses workshops like vision boarding and wreath making to address mental health and isolation after stroke.
Their 3rd Annual 5K Run/Walk is coming up May 9th at Glasgow Park. Over the past two years, the event has welcomed more than 825 participants and raised over $80,000. May is Stroke Awareness Month. Details and registration are at shinealightonstroke.org.

NEWS YOU CAN USE
🎟️ Middletown Acme sells winning Powerball ticket
A winning Powerball ticket worth hundreds of millions of dollars was sold at the Middletown Acme on East Main Street. The lucky numbers for the April 6 drawing were 07, 24, 37, 42, and 57, with a Powerball of 05.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the massive prize remains unclaimed. In Delaware, lottery winners have the option to keep their identities private when they come forward. The total payout will be subject to federal taxes, which can reach up to 37 percent.
State lottery officials advise the ticket holder to sign the back of their ticket and keep it in a secure location. The winner will need to contact the lottery office to begin the formal claims process.
🏥 Nemours opens $50 million fetal care wing
Nemours Children's Hospital in Wilmington just cut the ribbon on a new wing dedicated to medically complex births. The $50 million inpatient facility houses the first surgical fetal care center in Delaware, allowing medical teams to diagnose and treat conditions while a baby is still in the womb.
The expansion includes an advanced delivery unit, a neonatal intensive care unit extension, and a psychosocial support program. Hospital leaders noted the project was funded without state or federal money and will ultimately add 60 new jobs to the local healthcare sector.
The new wing officially opens to patients on April 13. Work is still underway on an accompanying $9 million outpatient fetal care center.

🏢 BPG plans apartments at Bracebridge complex
Buccini Pollin Group is pushing ahead with plans to convert upper floors of the Bracebridge office complex in downtown Wilmington into apartments. The property, which spans several buildings along North King Street and North French Street totaling more than 500,000 square feet, would keep office tenants on lower levels and retail at street level.
The redevelopment would also include design changes aimed at creating more street-level activity and better connections to the surrounding blocks. BPG has done similar conversions downtown before, including 101 DuPont Place and The Standard, both former DuPont office buildings turned residential.
Portions of the complex will stay dedicated to office space so current tenants can remain. The project is expected to unfold over several years as planning and construction continue.
🚧 Demolition clears path for Elkton Road Wawa
Demolition crews are currently clearing the corner of Elkton Road and Otts Chapel Road to make way for a new Wawa. The site previously housed a garden center and a towing business. Workers spent the past week knocking down the old structures to prepare the property for construction.
The planned convenience store will feature over 5,000 square feet of retail space, sixteen gas pumps, and sixty-seven parking spots. Wawa representatives noted the location is designed to capture northbound traffic heading into Newark, offering an easier stop than the existing store located half a mile away in Maryland.
The company is also exploring the addition of up to seven electric vehicle charging stations, depending on agreements with providers. Meanwhile, construction continues on a separate Wawa location on South College Avenue.
⚓ Army Corps clears Edgemoor container port project
The United States Army Corps of Engineers has approved the necessary permits to build a new container terminal in Edgemoor. The decision clears the way for the state and port operator Enstructure to begin dredging and wharf construction at the former DuPont titanium site along the Delaware River.
State officials submitted additional navigational studies and technical plans to federal agencies to secure the approval. The project aims to capture commercial shipping traffic by offering a closer alternative to docks further upriver in Philadelphia.
The new terminal enters a competitive regional market for maritime cargo. Construction will move forward following the resolution of earlier legal challenges from Philadelphia port operators regarding the initial permitting process.
🛍️ Past to Present Resale moves downtown
Past to Present Resale is setting up shop at a new location in the center of Delaware City. The local business is hosting a grand reopening on Saturday, April 11, at 108 Clinton Street.
The store carries a rotating inventory of clothing and household goods that range from vintage finds to brand new items. As part of the weekend reopening event, the first 25 customers to walk through the doors of the new Clinton Street storefront will receive a special gift.
The retail business previously operated out of a space on 4th Street before making the move to the downtown corridor. Regular operating hours at the new location will run Thursday through Sunday.
GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
🩺 Bids roll in for Delaware medical school
Four organizations have submitted proposals to operate the first medical school in Delaware. The state plans to use a portion of its recent federal rural health funding to launch the institution, aiming to enroll an initial class of at least 40 students by the fall of 2028.
The applicant pool includes regional institutions Thomas Jefferson University and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, both of which already reserve program seats for Delaware residents. A private medical school based in Puerto Rico also applied, along with consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. Sources told Spotlight Delaware that the state intends to spend $42.5 million of its initial federal award on the medical school.
State officials have not yet specified a target county or location for the campus. The chosen partner will be expected to utilize existing clinical training sites and hospitals across the state.
