📸 I-95 speed cameras start issuing fines

Source: Delaware Business Now

The State of Delaware began collecting fines from automated speed cameras in the Interstate 95 Churchmans Marsh construction zone on Saturday. The system recently finished a 21-day warning period and is now fully active for northbound traffic.

Drivers caught traveling 11 mph or more over the posted 55 mph speed limit will receive a ticket. First offenses start with a $20 base fine, plus an additional dollar for every mile per hour over the limit, along with other standard fees. These are civil penalties, meaning no points will be added to a driver's license.

🍦 UDairy Creamery renovations add new garden space

The University of Delaware is turning an asphalt parking lot into a new green space on its south campus. The Townsend Hall East Lawn and Garden will sit next to the UDairy Creamery, acting as a gateway to the botanic gardens.

The project includes a lawn, restrooms, and patio space. While construction continues this summer, the creamery is operating out of a temporary location at the campus ice arena. Both the new garden and the renovated shop are scheduled to open this fall.

🏘️ Home values outpace wages over last decade

Source: Delaware Business Now

If you have been keeping an eye on the real estate market lately, the latest numbers highlight a widening gap between paychecks and property costs. A recent analysis shows that rapid home price growth over the last decade has altered housing affordability across the country.

Between 2016 and 2026, home values across the United States surged by more than 81%. During that same ten-year window, wage growth increased by 47%. This difference in growth rates continues to shape the housing landscape for those looking to purchase property.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

🏚️ Newark weighs escalating fees for vacant properties

Source: Newark Post

Newark officials are considering a new program to address vacant houses and commercial buildings across the city. The proposal would require owners to register properties left unused for more than 180 days.

Under the plan, property owners would face escalating annual charges. Registration starts at $250 and climbs to $7,500 per year if a building remains empty for five years. Unpaid fees could result in property liens or a sheriff sale. Newark intends to partner with New Castle County to administer the program and split the collected revenue.

The city council discussed the idea favorably last week, noting resident complaints about condemned properties. The proposal still requires a formal vote before taking effect.
