If you are still hunting for last-minute gifts, this weekend might solve it. The Brandywine Holiday Festival of the Arts takes over the Chase Center on the Wilmington Riverfront on December 20 and 21, featuring work from roughly 150 local and regional artists.

Expect handmade and one-of-a-kind pieces across a wide range of styles, plus live music, food, and activities for kids like face painting and crafts. It is designed to be more than just shopping, with plenty to wander, watch, and enjoy along the way.

Hours are Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission is $5, and kids under 12 get in free. Easy to browse, easy to gift, and very much in the holiday spirit.

Delaware has cleared nearly $19 million in medical debt for more than 18,000 residents as part of a statewide partnership with Undue Medical Debt, a national nonprofit that buys and erases medical bills. The effort is funded through a $500,000 allocation in the FY 2026 state budget, with the goal of eventually eliminating up to $50 million in qualifying debt.

There is no application process. Eligibility is based on income or debt level, and qualifying residents are notified by mail once their balance has been eliminated. Letters from the first round are expected to arrive between December 19 and 23.

For many households, medical bills can linger long after care is received. This program focuses on reducing that long-term financial strain for Delaware families.

A new networking event is coming to downtown Wilmington just before the holidays. Bardea Blend takes place December 18 at 5 pm at Bardea Food and Drink on Market Street, bringing together creatives, professionals, and local entrepreneurs for a relaxed, end-of-year gathering.

The event is designed to be informal and social, with an emphasis on conversation rather than structured networking. Tickets are $25 and include light bites and a complimentary drink, with reservations handled through OpenTable.

Hosted at one of Wilmington’s most popular dining spots, the evening is meant to create space for connection, idea sharing, and catching up before the new year. If you enjoy meeting people across industries in a low-pressure setting, this is one to flag.

A new grocery option has landed in downtown Wilmington. Pretty Eddie’s is now open at 730 N. Market St., offering produce, pantry staples, baked goods, grab-and-go meals, and a deli counter in a small, walkable format. The store also features products from local vendors alongside familiar grocery items.

Located near several residential buildings, Pretty Eddie’s is designed to serve everyday needs for people living and working downtown, without the need for a longer grocery run. It fills a long-discussed gap on Market Street and adds another practical stop to the downtown mix.

A state task force has recommended merging the four school districts that serve Wilmington into a single, consolidated district, a move that would affect tens of thousands of families in northern New Castle County. The proposal, outlined by the Redding Consortium for Educational Equity and reported by Spotlight Delaware, would combine Brandywine, Christina, Colonial, and Red Clay into one district.

The recommendation passed on a 19 to 2 vote and now enters a study period before moving to the State Board of Education and, eventually, the General Assembly and governor. Supporters say consolidation could address long-standing disparities in resources and outcomes, while critics have raised concerns about governance, taxes, school assignments, and community impact.

No final decision has been made, but the proposal sets the stage for a wide-ranging public discussion about the future structure of public education in and around Wilmington.

SEPTA plans to close the ticket office at Wilmington’s Joseph R. Biden Jr. Railroad Station on December 31, citing the increased use of mobile apps, kiosks, and other digital payment options, according to Delaware Public Media. The Wilmington location is one of several regional stations affected by the change.

Local transit advocates are asking state transportation officials to step in, arguing that the closure could make travel more difficult for riders who rely on cash, do not use smartphones, or are unfamiliar with app based ticketing. Seniors and visitors to the area are among the groups they say would be most impacted.

Advocates also point out that Delaware helps fund SEPTA’s interstate rail service and believe maintaining an in person ticket office is a basic customer service. As of now, the closure is still scheduled to move forward at the end of the year.
