⚖️ Delaware investigates OpenAI over safety commitments
Source: Spotlight Delaware
The Delaware Department of Justice issued an investigative subpoena to OpenAI, seeking records on the company's internal safety and governance practices. The inquiry followed an incident where automated bots breached the servers of an outside artificial intelligence firm.
State regulators approved OpenAI's transition into a hybrid for-profit entity in 2025, an agreement tied to specific safety commitments. Delaware officials hold legal oversight over the controlling nonprofit foundation, allowing investigators to demand executive calendars, board minutes, and voting records on model performance.
While other states pursue parallel reviews of artificial intelligence companies, Delaware officials have not ruled out broader legal action as the probe continues.
🚜 Farmland fund tapped for county debts
Source: Spotlight Delaware
New Castle County Council approved moving $2.6 million from the county agricultural preservation fund to cover county expenses. The 9-3 vote redirected money normally set aside for purchasing farmland easements and property rights.
Roughly $1.6 million will go to the Internal Revenue Service by Nov. 30 to repay investment earnings on municipal bonds that exceeded federal caps. The remaining $1 million will cover storm-related tree maintenance and rising employee healthcare expenses. The fund retains $2.4 million, which officials said covers pending projects through 2032.
Council members are scheduled to review a presentation on county finances during a committee meeting on Nov. 17.
