Delaware School Board Races in the Spotlight

School board shakeups, kindness on wheels, and a robotic nurse uprising.

Rise and Shine, 302 — Ever sipped a beer brewed with actual moon dust? You could’ve if you were at Dogfish Head’s Rehoboth brewpub back in 2013. Their Celest-jewel-ale used crushed lunar meteorites and came wrapped in koozies made from real NASA space suit material—crafted by Delaware’s own ILC Dover.
☄️ Yep, that really happened »

🗳️ School Board Elections: Your Vote, Your Voice

Today is school board election day in Delaware. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and you don't need to be registered to vote—just bring proof of identity and residency in your district.

Eleven districts, including Appoquinimink, Brandywine, Christina, and Red Clay, have contested races. In Appoquinimink, candidates are focusing on fiscal responsibility, educator retention, and student mental health. Brandywine's race features debates on early childhood education and school safety.

These elections shape decisions on budgets, curricula, and leadership in our schools. To find your polling place and learn more about the candidates, visit WDEL.

🎙️ Philly Radio Shake-Up Hits Home

If you’ve ever sipped your morning coffee to the familiar banter of Preston & Steve, this one stings. After 22 years, Kathy Romano is out at WMMR. The station’s parent company, Beasley Media Group, chose not to renew her contract, a decision that left both Kathy and her co-hosts blindsided and emotional on-air.

Though it's Philly news, Delaware listeners know Kathy's voice like an old friend. Her departure marks the end of an era for the top-rated morning show that’s been a staple across the Delaware Valley. Kathy also hosted "Her Story," spotlighting inspiring women in our region.

Corporate cuts may be the reason, but the loss feels personal. For many of us, Kathy was part of our daily routine.

🚌 Wheels of kindness in New Castle

Talk about a real-life hero behind the wheel. Tim Kelleher, a longtime school bus driver in New Castle, noticed one of his students being carried down the stairs each morning—and decided to do something about it. He teamed up with Good Neighbors Home Repair to build a wheelchair ramp for her home, making it safer and easier for the whole family.

Even better? This isn’t Tim’s first time helping out—he did the same for another student back in 2019. Compassion like that doesn’t clock out at the end of a shift.

🐾 Delaware’s pet care? Not paw-some.

A new study from Your Service Animal just ranked Delaware dead last in the nation for pet healthcare. The culprits? A shortage of emergency clinics, not enough veterinarians, and high costs for care.

Meanwhile, our human hospitals are topping national charts. So, while we're acing human healthcare, our pets are left in the doghouse.

For a state that prides itself on being first, this ranking is a bit... ruff.

IN BUSINESS

🏃‍♂️💼 Why are Delaware companies sneaking off to Nevada?

Delaware is like the VIP lounge for big companies — everyone wants to be here because our rules are business-friendly and our judges know their stuff. It’s why we’ve got more corporations than cows (probably).

But now, a few companies are peeking over at Nevada. Why? Because Nevada’s rules are super simple and super chill. If someone tries to sue a boss there, it’s way harder to win. Less drama = happy CEOs.

A court case in Texas just showed how messy things can get, and some businesses went, “Hmm, maybe Nevada’s the cooler cousin?”

Delaware’s still the boss of business — but Nevada’s making some noise.

🤖 Nurses + Robots = Innovation at ChristianaCare

ChristianaCare has a new helper on the floor—and it’s not your average intern. Meet Moxi, the 300-pound robot with heart-shaped eyes and a knack for deliveries. Thanks to a $1.5 million grant from the American Nurses Foundation, Moxi is taking over routine tasks like fetching supplies and delivering lab samples, freeing up nurses to focus on patient care.

This AI-powered “cobot” works 22-hour shifts, navigates hospital halls without bumping into anyone, and even poses for selfies. Integrated with ChristianaCare’s electronic health records, Moxi knows what to deliver and when, making up to 200 deliveries a day across 11 units.

While Moxi doesn’t replace any human jobs, it does give nurses more time to do what they do best—care for patients. And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want a robot sidekick that brings the charm and the supplies?

📚 A New Chapter for Glasgow

Big news for book lovers: New Castle County is planning a brand-new library in the Glasgow area. The proposed site is off Route 40, near La Grange Parkway, and would serve the growing communities around Bear and Glasgow.

This would be the county’s first new library since the Route 9 Library opened in 2017. While it’s still early days—no design or construction timeline yet—county officials say they’re committed to making it.

If you’ve been dreaming of a closer spot for storytime, study sessions, or just a quiet reading nook, this could be your next favorite place.
