NEWS YOU CAN USE
🌡️ State opens public cooling centers
Source: WDEL
With temperatures climbing across Delaware over the next few days, state health officials are opening designated air-conditioned spaces for anyone looking to escape the weather.
These public cooling areas are available for people who need a reliable place to get out of the heat. Whether a home system is struggling to keep up or someone just needs a break from the outdoors, these locations offer a temporary spot to cool down.
The state plans to keep these spaces accessible while the current stretch of hot weather continues across the region. The air-conditioned facilities will remain open for public use over the coming days.
🎣 Newark youth wins state fishing tournament
Source: DNREC
DNREC recently announced the winners of the annual Delaware Youth Fishing Tournament. The event marked its fortieth year of introducing kids to the sport with competitions held across three ponds in New Castle, Kent, and Sussex counties.
Gabriel Alfaro of Newark took home the overall state championship title. He secured the top spot by reeling in over ten pounds of fish at Lums Pond. Other notable catches from the day included a four pound northern snakehead and a nine pound common carp.
The tournament featured participants ranging from 4 to 15 years old. Weighmasters recorded the catches at each location to determine the winners for each age group and county.
⛴️ Rapid response vessel heads to Delaware Bay
Source: WDEL
A newly designed vessel is heading to the Delaware Bay region to handle environmental emergencies on the water. The boat is specifically equipped to deal with maritime incidents across the local shipping channels.
The primary function of the watercraft is to provide rapid response capabilities in the event of an oil spill. Crews will use the specialized boat to deploy containment equipment and manage cleanup efforts directly on the bay.
The vessel joins the existing network of emergency response resources operating along the coast. It will be stationed in the region to remain on standby for future dispatch orders and routine maritime operations.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
🏧 Crypto ATM scams cost Delaware millions
Source: WDEL
Cryptocurrency ATMs are popping up in gas stations and corner stores all over Delaware. While they provide an easy way to purchase digital coins, they are also frequently used in local fraud schemes.
State lawmakers recently shared that Delaware residents lost more than $26 million to scams involving these machines last year. In these schemes, individuals are typically instructed to visit a local kiosk and deposit cash, which is instantly converted into digital currency and transferred away.
The volume of missing money has put the issue on the radar for state officials. Lawmakers are now pointing to that multimillion-dollar figure as they review the footprint of these digital cash machines.
🔌 Delaware bills target data center energy usage
Source: Spotlight Delaware
Delaware legislators are advancing two bills aimed at regulating the energy consumption of new data centers. The proposed legislation comes as the state anticipates five new projects that could potentially double local electricity usage.
House Bill 233 would require data centers to enter into service agreements to cover their transmission costs and mandate that they be the first cut off during blackouts. A second measure, House Bill 445, would require these facilities to supply all of their own power within ten years of opening.
Business groups and trade unions have opposed the measures, citing concerns about discouraging industry growth. With the legislative session ending soon, both bills await further committee review and a House vote.
📸 Newark leaders back electronic traffic enforcement
Source: WDEL
Newark lawmakers are currently reviewing a pair of distinct issues making their way through the legislative process. Local representatives are showing strong support for a push to expand the electronic driving violation system across Delaware.
The proposed expansion would broaden the use of automated traffic enforcement tools on local roads. At the same time, these local leaders are expressing noticeable skepticism regarding a separate piece of legislation designed to assist unhoused individuals.
City officials regularly review state proposals to determine how they might affect municipal operations. Both the electronic driving violation expansion and the unhoused assistance bill remain under review as the legislative session continues.
