NEWS YOU CAN USE
🎉 Wilmington plans year-long independence events
Wilmington is gearing up for a year-long celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Mayor John Carney announced a series of events, led by the Wilmington 250 committee, to mark this historic milestone. The lineup includes an extended Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, now running for a full week in August, and a Rumble in Rodney Square boxing match, paying homage to the city's boxing legacy.
In addition to these events, a reimagined July 4th Riverfront celebration is on the agenda. This festive occasion will feature multiple stage performances, including a city-commissioned dance project and a performance by the Delaware Symphony Orchestra.
Residents are encouraged to share their ideas for more events throughout the year by visiting inwilmde.com. It's a packed schedule that promises to bring the community together in celebration.
❄️ Bellevue pond ice not safe yet
Wilmington's recent cold snap has brought freezing temperatures, but not enough to make ice skating safe at Bellevue State Park's pond. Park officials have deemed the ice unsafe, despite many area lakes and ponds freezing over. A recent inspection showed inconsistent ice thickness, with patches of different colors hinting at potential hazards.
While Bellevue saw ice skating return last January for the first time since 2018, this year's heavy snowfall has acted as insulation, slowing down ice formation. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources advises that new, clear ice should be at least 4 inches thick for safety, a benchmark not yet met at Bellevue.
Despite some above-freezing daytime temperatures, cold overnight lows are expected to aid refreezing. Another stretch of below-freezing weather is on the horizon, which may help improve conditions for skating soon.

IN BUSINESS
⛳️ New indoor golf spot on Riverfront
The Clubhouse of Delaware is set to open this spring along Wilmington's Riverfront, offering a unique blend of indoor golf and dining. Co-owners Rick Knight and Matt Piecara are behind this innovative concept, which features nine high-tech golf simulators and a first-of-its-kind putting platform at each simulator. The venue aims to provide a realistic golfing experience in a weatherproof environment.
Located next to Penn Cinema Riverfront IMAX, the 8,000-square-foot space allows visitors to enjoy golf, dining, and a movie all in one trip. The Clubhouse also includes a full-service restaurant and bar, making it a social hub for both golfers and non-golfers alike. The venue is designed for flexibility, accommodating various events and gatherings.
As the Riverfront continues to grow as an entertainment district, The Clubhouse adds a fresh option for recreation and socializing. With its focus on realism and hospitality, it promises to be a lively addition to the area.
🔄 Delaware revamps trade name process
Delaware is streamlining its trade name registration process, making it easier for businesses. Starting February 2, 2026, all DBA filings will be handled online by the Delaware Division of Revenue. This change replaces the old county-by-county system with a single statewide portal, eliminating notarization and introducing a $25 fee. Existing DBAs remain valid, but businesses can optionally re-register to appear in the new registry.
Businesses will need an active Delaware business license to register a DBA. For those not conducting business in the state, a special 'Trade Name Only' license is available. The new system also allows for free amendments and updates to DBA details, with no fees for transfers or terminations.
This move aims to simplify the process and reduce administrative burdens. Businesses should stay informed on these changes to ensure compliance and consider professional support to navigate the new system smoothly.
GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
📈 Delaware eyes LLC fee hike
Governor Matt Meyer's budget proposal for fiscal year 2027 is stirring the pot with plans to hike business formation fees. This move, aimed at boosting revenue, primarily targets alternative entities like LLCs and LLPs. The Joint Finance Committee kicked off its budget hearings with this proposal in the spotlight.
Secretary of State Charuni Patibanda-Sanchez explained that the state hasn't raised these fees in over a decade. Currently, LLCs pay around $300 annually, and the plan is to bump it up by about $50. Other fees, such as those for dissolving a business or filing a trademark, are also set for an increase.
Next up, Patibanda-Sanchez’s office will draft a bill with the proposed fee hikes for legislative review. The focus, she says, is to reflect the cost of Delaware's speedy service, which remains a strong draw for businesses.
🏗 Delaware City data center halted
Delaware's environmental agency has blocked a proposed data center near Delaware City, citing the state's Coastal Zone Act, according to Spotlight Delaware. The plan by Starwood Digital Ventures included 516 diesel generators, raising concerns about environmental impact. The developer now has until February 18 to appeal the decision.
This ruling is a significant application of the Coastal Zone Act, a law that has been in place since 1971 to protect Delaware's shorelines. The decision was met with approval from local officials and environmental groups, who view it as a win for environmental protection.
While the project faces an uncertain future, discussions about balancing economic growth with environmental safeguards continue. Starwood may need to reconsider its approach if it hopes to proceed with the data center.
❄️ Newark businesses fined for snow-covered sidewalks
About 50 businesses in downtown Newark were cited for not clearing snow and ice from their sidewalks after last week's storm. City officials began inspections on Tuesday, focusing on Main Street and surrounding areas. For properties where sidewalks remained uncleared, the city hired contractors to do the job and billed the property owners, adding a 50% surcharge.
The city enforced the 24-hour snow removal rule strictly for commercial areas, citing safety and accessibility concerns, especially for pedestrians and those with disabilities. Residential areas were given more leniency due to the storm's severity and the challenges it posed. City Manager Tom Coleman suggested the council consider updating the snow-clearing law for flexibility in deadlines after large storms.
Another major storm could lead the city to request additional funds for storm response, as the recent efforts were costly. The city aims to balance enforcement with understanding the difficulties faced by residents and businesses during severe weather.
