🚦Main Street Slowdown
Main Street jams, fishing fun, and Amazon on repeat.
Rise and Shine, 302 — did you know octopuses have three hearts, and two of them stop beating when they swim.
Your 302 Rundown:
Main Street mayhem — Newark’s got traffic upgrades and opinions galore
Youth fishing tourney returns with trophies, trout, and tiny anglers
Middletown scores another Amazon facility (yep, another one)
Buckle up — we’re diving in.
NEWS YOU CAN USE
🎣 Reel fun for the little ones
The 39th Annual Youth Fishing Tournament is happening June 7 from 10 AM to 1 PM, and it’s totally free for kids ages 4–15. Hosted by the Natural Resources Police, the tourney runs at Lums Pond, Akridge Scout Reservation, and Blockhouse Pond.
Trophies, fresh air, and some friendly competition? Just make sure to register by May 23.
🛑 One word is holding up Delaware’s weed rollout
Delaware’s recreational cannabis launch hit a snag when the FBI flagged the term “agent” in state law as too vague for background checks. While the FBI has now granted a fingerprint service code, allowing selected applicants to proceed, lawmakers still need to tweak the language to fully comply with federal standards.
This hiccup delayed the anticipated spring opening, leaving entrepreneurs in limbo.
But with the fix in motion, Delaware’s adult-use market is back on track—just a few legislative steps away from lighting up.
🗑️ DSWA's 2025 Collection Events Are Here!
DSWA just dropped its 2025 Collection Event Schedule — aka your excuse to finally toss that crusty can of paint and the printer that’s been “out of ink” since 2012.
They’ll take electronics, hazardous waste, and docs for shredding (looking at you, tax returns from 1998).
Newark’s getting two drop-off days: May 10 and November 8. It’s free, it’s easy, and it’ll make your spring cleaning feel so official.
IN BUSINESS
📦 Middletown's getting another Amazon!
Amazon just announced plans to open a second fulfillment center in Middletown, and it’s a big one — we’re talking up to 1,000 jobs in a brand-new 1 million-square-foot facility. The site is just west of their existing center and could open as early as 2026.
For locals, this means more job opportunities and (hopefully) even faster deliveries. Love 'em or not, Amazon keeps betting big on Delaware.
GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
🍎 Kale yeah, Delaware!
Gov. Meyer just rolled out the new Food is Medicine Committee — because sometimes a bag of spinach does more than a bottle of pills.
The goal? Get healthy food to folks battling chronic illness, especially in underserved communities. Bonus: it supports local farmers, too.
🚧 Main Street speed bumps? Maybe! 🛑
Newark’s looking to slow things way down on Main Street — and we’re not just talking about traffic. City Council is eyeing a proposal for speed bumps and other safety upgrades to protect pedestrians, especially after a string of recent accidents. They’re even fast-tracking the timeline to possibly install improvements this summer.
It’s part of a bigger push to make Main Street more walkable — and honestly, who wouldn’t love a safer stroll between Brew HaHa and Bing’s?
🚫 No love for cousin couples
A bill to recognize first-cousin marriages from out of state just got the boot in Delaware.
Lawmakers said “thanks but no thanks” to the idea — even though it was meant to help with stuff like immigration, not legalize cousin weddings here.
Moral of the story? In Delaware, keep it in the family... just not that way.
