🧹 In Today’s News: Homes Go Dust Bunny-Free With Hero Tips
Spring sunlight has a funny way of revealing every little thing we meant to clean months ago. Before you give up your whole weekend to a deep clean, try a few quick tricks that make a big difference. Start by decluttering. Fewer items means faster cleaning. Then work from the top down. Ceiling fans, vents, and shelves first so dust falls where you can catch it. A microfiber cloth on kitchen tongs makes quick work of blinds, while a simple vinegar and water mix leaves windows sparkling. For baseboards, wrap a damp cloth around a broom handle and wipe. No crawling required.

🐴 Maryland 5 Star takes a break
The Maryland 5 Star equestrian event held at the Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area is taking a break this year. Organizers say the event has reached a "natural point of evolution" after five successful years. While the 5 Star won't happen, a similar but lower-level competition called the CCI3-L will take its place.
The Fair Hill Foundation has expressed confidence in this pause, viewing it as a proactive step to ensure the event's future success. They plan for the Maryland 5 Star to make a strong return next year with improvements and changes that reflect its growth.
The decision to pause the 5 Star event in 2026 was made in collaboration with the United States Equestrian Foundation and other stakeholders, aiming to transition the event from a successful launch to a long-term institution.
🎸 Mercadito Concerts hit New Castle Market
In a unique twist on the Tiny Desk Concerts, Fiesta Fresh Market & Carniceria in New Castle is hosting live music performances right in the aisles. The series, called "Mercadito Concerts," is the brainchild of José Luis Aguilar Garcia, who owns the market with his family. Local band Ilusión recently performed, serenading shoppers with their tunes among the fresh produce.
According to Spotlight Delaware, Aguilar Garcia hopes to showcase up-and-coming artists while also introducing more Mexican culture to Delaware. The concerts have already attracted musicians like Julio César during their tour stops between major cities.
Looking ahead, Aguilar Garcia is hoping for brand sponsorships to keep the music playing. For now, the concerts continue to transform the market into a lively venue, blending everyday shopping with a vibrant cultural experience.

🎣 Trout season kicks off in Delaware
Delaware's upstate trout season is just around the corner, with the streams set to open exclusively for young anglers under 16 on Saturday, April 4. The following day, Sunday, April 5, marks the official start for all anglers. The designated streams, including White Clay Creek and Red Clay Creek, will be stocked with rainbow trout in preparation.
To ensure a smooth start, all fishing in these trout streams will be off-limits from March 21 until the youth opening day to allow for trout stocking and acclimation. Anglers should be aware of the regulations, including the need for a fishing license and trout stamp for those 16 and older.
Stocking will continue throughout April, with adjustments to the schedule already announced. Anglers can check the 2026 Delaware Fishing Guide for the latest updates and rules. Happy fishing!

🏢 Concord Mall set for redevelopment
Concord Mall is set to change hands, with Abrams Realty and Development reportedly under contract to buy it from Namdar Realty Group. The mall, which has faced challenges with tenant departures, will be redeveloped by the suburban Philadelphia developer. Previously, a portion of the mall was mistakenly listed for sale at $30 million.
The sale includes the mall's enclosed interior, while anchor store Boscov’s operates on a ground lease. The long-closed Sears site is owned by the successor of the defunct company. Concord Mall has struggled against competitors like Christiana Mall and Christiana Fashion Center, which offer more dynamic retail experiences.
The mall's location on a narrow strip of land in a tax-free state presents unique development opportunities. Despite these challenges, the adjacent affluent area could offer potential for revitalization. Meanwhile, other malls in the region, such as Christiana Mall, are also feeling the pinch with store closures, including the upcoming Nordstrom closure.
🚀 GE Aerospace boosts Newark investment
GE Aerospace is doubling down on its Newark site with a fresh $5 million investment. This move is part of a broader $1 billion initiative across its U.S. manufacturing locations set for 2026. The Newark funds will be used to enhance equipment and machinery for advancing hypersonic flight technology.
This investment follows a previous $2 million infusion into Delaware and highlights Newark's role as a key player in producing ceramic matrix composites. These materials are lighter and withstand higher temperatures, crucial for both commercial and military aircraft performance.
GE Aerospace also plans to hire 5,000 new workers across the U.S., though specific numbers for the Newark site weren't disclosed. The company aims to maintain U.S. aerospace leadership through sustained investment in technology and workforce development.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
💳 Bill targets credit card tip fees
A bill that would ban credit card companies from charging fees on tip transactions is moving forward in Delaware's General Assembly. This proposal, which addresses fees typically ranging from 2-3% of the tip amount, has sparked a debate between financial sector representatives and small businesses.
Financial industry voices, including the Delaware Bankers Association, argue that the measure could harm the state's economy by impacting franchise tax contributions. Meanwhile, restaurant and service sector groups support the bill, citing the high costs of credit card fees and their impact on business operations.
The bill, sponsored by State Rep. Kim Williams, aims to protect small businesses by eliminating what she describes as an unfair surcharge. The proposal has passed committee and is now headed to the House floor for further consideration.
📚 Delaware Libraries Day announced
Governor Matt Meyer has officially declared March 12, 2026, as "Delaware Libraries Day" during a ceremony at Legislative Hall in Dover. The event saw a gathering of state officials, library staff, and advocates celebrating the role of libraries in the community.
Delaware Libraries are marking their 125th anniversary this year, coinciding with the nation's 250th birthday. Despite the celebrations, only 60% of Delawareans currently hold a library card. Efforts are underway to boost this number, with libraries offering a range of resources from books to technology.
To commemorate these milestones, Delaware Libraries will release a booklet showcasing their achievements over the past 25 years. Programming and events celebrating the anniversary will continue throughout the year, aiming to engage more residents in library services.
📚 Delaware boosts early literacy funding
Delaware is ramping up its early literacy efforts with over $8 million in investments to enhance reading instruction across the state. This includes $6.1 million in Bridge to Practice grants awarded to 25 districts and charter schools. The funds focus on improving teaching quality, strengthening school leadership, and using evidence-based reading methods as part of the state's Early Literacy Plan.
The strategy aims to ensure every child reads at grade level by third grade. Investments will enhance professional learning for educators, strategic staffing, and data systems to track progress. Governor Matt Meyer and Secretary of Education Cindy Marten emphasize the importance of strong daily instruction supported by high-quality materials.
The three-year investment will help accelerate existing literacy initiatives, with a focus on classroom implementation. Schools like Indian River and Colonial School Districts are using grants to support professional learning and instructional leadership, aiming for cohesive systems that ensure reading proficiency by third grade.
