Newark Charter’s Katie Miro Named 2025 Charter Teacher of the Year

Top teacher honored, big brands may bail, and a new wax spot opens in Pike Creek.

Rise and shine, 302—before trains, every town had its own time.
It was total chaos. So in 1883, railroads stepped in and created the time zones we still use today—to stop confusion and avoid disaster.

Your 302 Rundown:

  • 🍎 Delaware’s top teacher shines: Newark Charter’s Katie Miro just earned Charter School Teacher of the Year for her nature-based lessons and deep community roots.

  • 🚪 Corporate giants reconsider Delaware: Big-name companies like Roblox are plotting a “Dexit” after a court ruling shook up founder-friendly policies.

  • ✨ Smooth moves in Pike Creek: Waxing the City has opened its doors with 50% off first-time waxes — just in time for summer.

Let’s get to it 👇

NEWS YOU CAN USE

🍻 Drafts on delay!

Bummer news: this Friday’s Parks on Draft at Handloff Park is officially rained out. But don’t shelve your lawn chair just yet — the fun’s been rescheduled for Friday, May 16.

Expect food trucks, local brews, and live tunes from Bella Von and Pizzeria Mariana. If you haven’t been, think of it as happy hour under the trees — with room for the whole crew (kids and dogs included).

Mark your calendar — and maybe cross your fingers for dry skies this time.

🍎 A+ for Ms. Miro!

Big cheers for Newark Charter’s own Katie Miro, who just snagged the title of 2025 Delaware Charter School Teacher of the Year! She’s a first-grade rockstar known for nature-based lessons, mentoring new teachers, and leading the school’s beloved nature club.

She says the honor reflects the strong bonds she builds with students and families — and honestly, we believe it. My son might be lucky enough to have her next year, so I’m extra thrilled!

IN BUSINESS

🚪 Companies eyeing the exit

Delaware’s reign as the go-to state for corporate HQs is facing a shake-up. After a Delaware court nixed Elon Musk’s $56B Tesla pay package, Musk fired back, urging companies to steer clear of the First State. Now, at least nine major firms—including Roblox and Simon Property Group—are putting "Dexit" votes on their agendas to reincorporate elsewhere. Some have already made the leap to Florida or Nevada, citing Delaware’s increasingly litigious climate for founder-led companies.

Delaware still hosts the majority of U.S. public companies, but this trend could dent its reputation—and revenue. The state has responded with legal tweaks to reassure corporate giants, but whether that’s enough to stop the exodus remains to be seen.

Smooth move, Pike Creek!

There’s a new spot to get silky — Waxing the City just opened their Pike Creek location on May 1, and they’re celebrating with 50% off your first wax when you pre-book. Yes, really.

Whether you’re prepping for summer, a big event, or just tired of razors, this could be your new go-to for brows, Brazilians, and everything in between.

It’s your sign to treat yourself — smooth skin’s just a booking away.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

🚫 Red 40 gets the red light

Delaware is on the verge of banning Red 40—a petroleum-based dye found in snacks like Pop-Tarts, Doritos, and Gatorade—from school meals. The bill, now awaiting Gov. Matt Meyer’s signature, follows concerns over potential links to hyperactivity, cancer, and organ damage in children.

Other countries, including Canada and those in Europe, have already restricted Red 40. The U.S. is catching up, with the FDA planning to phase out petroleum-based dyes nationwide.

If signed, Delaware schools will need to rethink their menus—meaning fewer neon-colored treats and more natural alternatives.
