NEWS YOU CAN USE

🚦 Newark sets up speed cameras

Newark has installed its first speed monitoring camera on Hillside Road. This comes after City Council approved a speed camera program following several serious incidents on Main Street. Although the camera setup took longer than initially planned, it will be operational starting March 24, kicking off a 30-day warning period before penalties begin.

City Manager Tom Coleman explained the camera will rotate between locations, spending two weeks at each site. This strategy allows the city to address any issues before moving to busier streets like Capitol Trail and Stafford Avenue. Main Street, however, is not included in this project, as it already has other safety measures in place.

Coleman mentioned that while speed cameras are a step towards improving traffic safety, long-term solutions might involve changing road designs to naturally discourage speeding. For now, Newark is focusing on refining the camera system at less busy locations before tackling more complex areas.

🚂 Easter Bunny Express rolls into town

Springtime fun is back on track with the Easter Bunny Express at Wilmington & Western Railroad. Families can hop aboard historic railcars at Greenbank Station, just outside Wilmington, for a scenic journey through the Red Clay Valley. This annual event brings a touch of nostalgia and a visit from the Easter Bunny, making it a delightful outing for all ages.

The train ride offers a ten-mile glimpse into Delaware's natural beauty and industrial past, with historic bridges and quiet creekside views. As the train chugs along, early spring buds add a fresh touch to the landscape, enhancing the seasonal charm.

This festive tradition, part of the railroad's themed excursions, invites families to enjoy a day of history, nature, and interactive fun. With the Easter Bunny on board, it's a beloved way for locals to welcome spring each year.

🏢 Wilmington Senior Center closes abruptly

The Wilmington Senior Center, a staple in the community for over 70 years, has suddenly closed its doors. This unexpected shutdown follows years of financial difficulties and staff reductions. Despite receiving state and county funding, the center struggled to meet its budget needs, leaving many wondering about its future.

Spotlight Delaware reports that officials have not publicly addressed the closure or provided a timeline for reopening. Some local leaders suggest it might be temporary due to leadership changes, while others point to ongoing financial challenges. The center's closure has left many seniors without a vital community resource.

City and state officials are now in discussions to explore options for supporting the affected seniors. Meanwhile, other local senior centers are considering how they might assist those who relied on the Wilmington Senior Center's services. The community waits to see if and how the center will reopen.

💊 KI tablets available in Middletown

If you're living or working within 10 miles of the Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Stations, you can pick up potassium iodide (KI) tablets in Middletown. The distribution will be at the Volunteer Hose Company of Middletown on West Green Street from 11 AM to 7 PM. Make sure to bring a photo ID or proof of residency or employment within the Emergency Planning Zone.

These tablets are crucial for protecting your thyroid from radioactive iodine during a radiation emergency, though they won't shield against external radiation. If your current KI tablets have expired, you can exchange them for new ones at the distribution center.

Residents outside the 10-mile zone can inquire about KI tablets at local pharmacies. The tablets are distributed as part of a program by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and are a key part of Delaware’s nuclear emergency plans.

IN BUSINESS

🥪 Capriotti's celebrates 50 years with expansion

Capriotti's Sandwich Shop, which started on Wilmington's Union Street in the Little Italy neighborhood, is marking its 50th anniversary with plans for continued growth. Known for its Bobbie sandwich and as a favorite of President Joe Biden, the chain has expanded from Delaware and Las Vegas to over two dozen states.

To celebrate the milestone, Capriotti's is rolling out a new franchise incentive called "50-50-50." This program offers up to $50,000 in savings on franchise fees and royalties for new partners. The goal is to attract the next generation of franchisees who want to grow with the brand.

With more than 160 locations, Capriotti's continues to build on its success. The company, based in Las Vegas, aims to expand its footprint even further, offering opportunities for both single and multi-store operators.

🏗 New mixed-use project breaks ground in Wilmington

Community leaders and partners gathered on Thursday to kick off a new mixed-use development at 2923 N. Market Street in Wilmington. Spearheaded by Nasr Mohamed, a graduate of the Jumpstart Wilmington developer training program, the project aims to transform a vacant lot into a three-story building with affordable housing and commercial space.

The development will feature two ground-floor spaces designed for restaurants, while the upper floors will house four three-bedroom apartments available to Section 8 applicants. This initiative, supported by organizations like Jumpstart Wilmington and Cinnaire, highlights a push for more family-sized housing and commercial amenities in the area.

With construction underway, the project is set to bring both housing opportunities and economic activity to a neighborhood eager for reinvestment. The collaboration aims to showcase how local talent and targeted training can turn vacant spaces into community assets.

🏡 Delaware home sales dip in February

Delaware's real estate market hit a cool patch in February, with home sales dropping by 16% compared to last year, according to the Delaware Association of Realtors. A total of 698 homes changed hands, while pending contracts and new listings also saw declines.

Affordability pressures seem to be a key factor, as homes lingered on the market longer, averaging 54 days. Prices showed mixed trends: the median listed price rose over 5% to $421,666, but the median sold price slipped nearly 3% to $366,481.

Despite a modest 6% rise in active inventory, housing availability remains tight. Buyers are reportedly becoming more selective, taking their time before making decisions, which is influencing both pricing and market dynamics.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

🏫 McKean High to become vo-tech school

The Red Clay Consolidated School Board is moving forward with plans to transform McKean High School into a vo-tech and college hybrid campus, set to open in fall 2027. This change has stirred concerns among McKean staff, parents, and students, who attended a recent school board meeting to express their worries about the transition.

Community members, including McKean teacher Morgan Dukes, are calling for more involvement in the decision-making process. Dukes emphasized the importance of authentic engagement and transparent communication, urging the district to pause the plan and actively involve the community through surveys and town halls.

Concerns also focus on the impact on McKean's special needs program. Karen James, a parent of a student in the Meadowood Program, highlighted the challenges of relocating to A.I. DuPont High School, which would require significant ADA compliance upgrades. The district's plan is still on track for fall 2027, but voices like James hope for accommodations for Meadowood students.
