FIFA Comes to Newark

Delaware is hosting one of the state's official FIFA World Cup watch parties at the Bob Carpenter Center on Friday, June 12.

Before the USA takes on Paraguay, fans can enjoy a family friendly outdoor festival from 7 to 9 PM featuring food trucks, inflatable games, vendors, soccer activities, and more. When kickoff approaches, everyone heads inside to watch the match on the big screen. Participating food trucks will feature wood fired oven pizza, street tacos, cheesesteaks, crab fries, ice cream, parfaits and more!

The event has a hometown connection. Former Delaware Rush (now Delaware Football Club) player and former Philadelphia Union star Mark McKenzie is expected to be part of the U.S. squad and could be in the starting lineup.

Whether you're a longtime soccer fan or simply looking for a fun family night out, this official FIFA watch party offers a chance to experience World Cup excitement close to home. Tickets: $15

💧 Governor Meyer issues statewide drought watch

Source: DNREC

Governor Matt Meyer issued a statewide drought watch for Delaware following a steady decline in precipitation. The dry conditions are particularly severe in Kent and Sussex counties.

Under the watch, residents are asked to voluntarily reduce outdoor water use, such as limiting lawn watering. State officials estimate Delaware needs 21 inches of rainfall over the next three months to return the water supply to normal levels. A statewide open burning ban also remains in effect through September 30.

Officials will continue monitoring precipitation and groundwater levels. If conditions worsen, the state could escalate the watch to a warning or emergency, which would trigger mandatory water restrictions.

🐔 Massive Blue Hen statue lands at UD

Source: Newark Post

A massive bronze Blue Hen has officially taken up residence on the University of Delaware campus. The new sculpture sits just off Main Street near Old College, nestled in a courtyard between Alumni Hall and Recitation Hall.

Weighing in at more than 3,000 pounds, the bird stands over seven feet tall and stretches ten feet from beak to tail feathers. The alumni association funded the project, bringing in a New Jersey sculptor known for large collegiate sports monuments to create the piece.

Crews will finish up the surrounding area in the coming weeks by adding fresh landscaping and lighting. They also plan to install a sign specifically reminding visitors not to ride the giant hen.

🩺 Delaware lands its first four-year medical school

Source: State of Delaware News

Governor Matt Meyer announced a partnership with Thomas Jefferson University to open a regional campus of Sidney Kimmel Medical College in Delaware, creating the state's first M.D.-granting institution. Delaware is currently one of only three states without a medical school of its own.

Pre-clinical instruction will be based in New Castle County, with clinical training routed primarily through health systems in Kent and Sussex counties. The effort is organized under a newly formed Delaware Medical School Consortium, which includes Delaware academic institutions and healthcare systems.

Details on accreditation, enrollment timelines, and academic programming are still in development and will be announced as planning continues.

🚆 DART revives plans for Newport train station

Source: Spotlight Delaware

Delaware transit officials are once again looking at bringing passenger rail service back to Newport. DART recently held a public workshop to gather feedback on an early conceptual plan for a new station along the SEPTA line.

The proposed stop would sit at James and Water streets near the Interstate 95 overpass. Early designs include a small surface lot with about 100 parking spaces, updated sidewalks, and a new bike lane. While construction funding is not secured, the Delaware Department of Transportation has set aside money for a comprehensive design and cost report.

DART plans to host another open house in July to collect more community input. The final report is expected by the end of the year.

🏘️ Wilmington tiny home plan faces neighborhood pushback

Source: Spotlight Delaware

Wilmington officials are exploring a $1.5 million proposal to build a tiny home village for the homeless, but the plan is meeting early resistance. The city is working with the nonprofit Springboard Delaware to potentially place 40 shelters in either the Southbridge or Eastside neighborhoods.

During recent civic meetings, residents and local representatives pushed back against the idea. Neighbors expressed concerns about adding the facility to areas they described as already underserved. City Councilwoman Zanthia Oliver suggested using an existing vacant building instead.

The project depends on securing state funding for operating costs and federal relief dollars for construction. City officials stated that conversations with the surrounding neighborhoods will continue.

🗂 Delaware clears 64,000 records in first automated batch

Source: State of Delaware News

Governor Matt Meyer announced that Delaware has run its first automated batch under the state's Clean Slate law, clearing more than 64,000 eligible cases from public-facing criminal background checks. That single batch is more than three times the number of cases processed manually throughout all of 2025.

Delaware's Clean Slate Act, passed in 2021, requires eligible low-level offense records to be cleared automatically, without petitions or fees. The state had been working through a backlog manually since the law took effect, processing roughly 20,000 cases before the automated system came online.

The administration says its goal is to clear the bulk of the remaining backlog, which tops one million cases, by August. Additional automated batches are being identified and validated now.
