NEWS YOU CAN USE

🎉 Kick off summer at Hagley!

This Saturday, May 24, from 10 AM to 4 PM, Hagley Museum is throwing its annual Summer Kick-Off Celebration. Expect hands-on activities, engaging tours, and a sneak peek at the season’s upcoming fun. Food trucks will be on-site, and the Visitor Center café will offer sandwiches, snacks, and drinks. Kids 14 and under get in free.

It’s a perfect way to spend the day with family and friends, enjoying the beautiful grounds and interactive exhibits. For more details, visit the event page.

🚢 Cruise into summer on the Christina

Summer’s better on a boat—and Delaware Cruises is back with the best floating fun above the canal. These breezy tours along the Christina River launch from the Wilmington Riverfront and offer everything from relaxing daytime rides to festive evening cruises with drinks, music, and unbeatable skyline views.

Sundays are for mimosas and brunch on the water, but there’s also the super-popular Rum & Reggae Cruise—think island vibes and dancing—plus classic Sunset Cruises that make golden hour even dreamier. Planning a milestone bash or just want the boat to yourself? You can charter the whole thing for private parties up to 48 guests.

It’s one of those under-the-radar gems that locals love once they try it. Cool breeze, great views, no beach traffic—what’s not to love?

(Just so you know—this isn’t an ad. We just think it’s a really fun local thing worth checking out!)

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

🎓 UD students, meet your new $100 bill

Heads up, Blue Hens! The Delaware General Assembly just approved a $100 annual fee on for each University of Delaware student. The goal? To help Newark plug a $6 million budget hole by having UD chip in for city services like police, roads, and parks. Since the university is tax-exempt, this per-student fee is Newark’s way of asking for a little help from its biggest neighbor.

The city expects to collect over $2 million from the tax, which could be passed down to students as a fee. Some grad students aren’t thrilled, arguing they already pay high rents that contribute to city taxes. But as Rep. Cyndie Romer (a UD parent herself) put it, $100 a year seems fair to keep Newark running smoothly.

Whether you see it as a necessary contribution or an extra burden, this new tax is set to impact the UD community.

⚖️ Delaware rethinks the bar exam

Big news for aspiring attorneys: the Delaware Supreme Court just launched a task force to explore alternatives to the traditional bar exam. Led by Justice Gary Traynor, the group will consider options like apprenticeships, law school-based programs, and public service commitments as new pathways to bar admission. The initiative aims to improve diversity and reduce barriers in the legal profession.

One model under review is New Hampshire’s Daniel Webster Scholar Honors Program, which allows law students to bypass the bar exam through a rigorous, practice-based curriculum. The task force's recommendations are expected by June 2026 as part of a longer-term review..

If you’ve ever dreamed of practicing law but dreaded the bar exam, this could be your chance.
