NEWS YOU CAN USE

🔥 Carrying the Flame of Hope Across Delaware

Nearly 800 law enforcement officers are lacing up for the 39th Annual Delaware Law Enforcement Torch Run, happening June 11–13. They’ll relay the Flame of Hope from Fenwick Island to Wilmington, making ceremonial stops in Rehoboth Beach, Dover, and Newark. The journey wraps up at the University of Delaware’s Bob Carpenter Center, just in time for the Special Olympics Summer Games Opening Ceremony.

This isn’t just a run—it’s a powerful show of unity and inclusion. Since it began, the Torch Run has raised over $12 million to support year-round sports training for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Want to cheer them on or donate? It’s a heartwarming way to support our community’s athletes and the officers who champion them.

🌱 Pot farm planned for Newark business park

A new indoor marijuana grow facility could be sprouting soon in Newark’s Sandy Brae Industrial Park. Herbal Growers LLC just got the thumbs-up from the planning commission to build a 20,000-square-foot operation at 302 Markus Court. No retail sales—just cultivation, trimming, and packaging.

The final decision now rests with city council.

⚡ More cash for greener homes

Energize Delaware is juicing up its energy efficiency incentives. Homeowners can now snag up to $1,700 in rebates for upgrades like insulation, HVAC systems, and energy-efficient appliances. The program also offers free energy audits to help identify where your home could be more efficient.

If you've been considering making your home more energy-efficient, now's a great time to take advantage of these expanded incentives.

IN BUSINESS

🐾 Pet care on wheels

Humane Animal Partners is hitting the road with a new mobile vet clinic, bringing affordable pet care to communities across Delaware. The clinic will offer services like vaccinations, wellness checks, and microchipping, making it easier for pet owners to access essential care without traveling far. The mobile unit is set to debut next Thursday, aiming to reach underserved areas and ensure more pets stay healthy and happy.

It's a win for both pets and their people—convenient, compassionate care coming right to your neighborhood.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

💰 Pay bump alert for Delaware state workers

Delaware’s state employees and public school staff are in line for a 2% pay bump under the state’s proposed 2026 budget. Teachers, nurses, and other non-admin education staff might get a little more thanks to extra funding from the Public Education Compensation Committee.

It’s not a game-changer raise — but in a tight budget year, it’s something. Lawmakers also kept universal free breakfast for kids, added support for literacy programs, and funneled more into rental assistance. Small steps, but steps all the same.
